Life Balance at UWA

Life balance is a self-defined, self-determined state of wellbeing that a person can reach, or aspire to, and that allows them to effectively manage multiple responsibilities at work, at home and in their community.

UWA recognises that life balance is a very personal choice that often varies greatly between individuals and over time, and strives to support staff to achieve the life balance they are seeking.

At UWA, life balance is viewed as of importance to all staff. The University recognises that during the course of their employment, staff members will undergo many changes in their lives, of which, for many, having children is only one. Some may leave the workforce for a time, utilising, for example, parental leave, and then undertake a graduated return to work. Others may choose to study or travel, still others may need to adopt flexible working practices to accommodate eldercare, and some may seek to phase into retirement.

UWA’s life balance philosophy therefore acknowledges that all employees have full and complex lives outside the workplace. Conflict between a person’s personal commitments and their work can affect their concentration, motivation and productivity; and can have widespread repercussions affecting other staff and students. The University provides flexible working conditions to support an employee’s outside commitments and meet workplace needs, and thus to ensure that it attracts, retains and develops the full potential of the very best staff.
