Academic Career Structure

We are working on expanding the choice of career pathing and rewarding performance excellence. This initiative will ensure UWA is nationally competitive when it comes to career paths and rewarding performance through higher salaries.

What about if you’ve just started your career…?

We advertise a range of entry level career opportunities including apprenticeships, traineeships and cadetships. Faculties and Schools often have employment opportunities for new graduates either during their semester break or after completion of their studies. Student Services provide a job board specifically for students. You can apply for internally advertised positions as they arise or request a transfer opportunity to acquire new skills and work in other locations.

We provide a wide range of workshops including the recruitment and selection process, how to write a job application and interview tips and techniques, career management opportunities, managing meetings, customer service, manual handling, and project management. We have special workshops for researchers in grant application preparation, publication writing, personal assistants, and teacher development and assessment programmes. Visit Research, Teaching and Learning, and Staff Development. Take up one of the many networking opportunities via a project, committee work, join the book club, register for a lunch time class on campus, attend a public lecture or enrol in UWA Extension programme and join in life-long learning! Explore career opportunities, scale down or scale up work commitments or try working in a different area via the mobility programme.

Or in mid-career…?

Are you ready to take the next career step? There are several opportunities to further develop your career including temporary internal transfers, acting in higher duties, staff exchanges or placements with other organisations. We have a range of Staff Development Programmes for emerging leaders including our successful Leadership Development for Women programme and a range of leadership and management workshops and programmes for new managers. There are many opportunities for networking within the University, including contributing to policy development in any of the Committees, or areas of interest including Research, Teaching, networking externally, presenting a guest lecture or conference paper, writing a publication or mentoring.

What about if you’ve peaked in your career…?

You can continue with your professional or consulting expertise or provide pro bono work to the community. We have a wide range of mentoring and leadership opportunities available according to your expertise and interests. These include mentoring students and staff, leading professional development programmes, participating in joint venture research development opportunities in collaboration with community and industry organisations or giving guest lectures.

Do you want to scale back your work commitments? We have opportunities for staff to work towards achieving a more balanced lifestyle including the opportunity to provide flexibility in research and teaching.

What about returning to employment…?

Maybe it's the right time to re-enter the workforce after spending time raising your young family and now they're off to school? Or perhaps you've completed your studies and looking for the next career step? We're keen to hear from you.

So you have tasted retirement and now need more intellectual and social stimulation? Or you want to share your state of relaxed blissfulness with your former colleagues? Perhaps working part time to top up your superannuation or need time out from your grandchildren? We are ready for you.

You could have recovered from an illness or injury and want to work part time or full time?

Whatever your reasons we welcome people from all backgrounds, stage in life or career. We have the opportunities to help you on your way to achieve the transition or balance in your life.
