Working at UWA
Nobel Laureate
Our excellence in teaching and research is reflected in numerous national and international research and teaching awards obtained by staff. Our 2005 Nobel Laureate Professor Barry Marshall was recognised for his joint discovery of the bacterium helicobacter pylori and its role in gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. Professor Marshall manages a molecular biology laboratory at UWA.

Industry and Community Partnerships
UWA is nationally recognised for the quality of its academic staff and has strong strategic partnerships with industry, the professions and government. For example a new $50 million software engineering centre was built in partnership with the Western Australian Government and Motorola. UWA operates in collaboration with other universities of research excellence in Australia and internationally. The University is home to Australia's first Confucius Institute, a world class centre for co-ordinating and enhancing China related activities. It strengthens the understanding, opportunities and bonds between individuals, enterprises, communities and institutions in Western Australia with the People's Republic of China and the global Chinese diaspora.

Staff and Students
UWA offers a broad and balanced coverage of disciplines in the arts, sciences and major professions across the institution’s nine faculties. The University’s high quality teaching and research ensures its position as the university of choice for the state’s highest achieving school leavers, as well as attracting high-calibre undergraduate and postgraduate students nationally and globally. UWA graduates are more likely to gain full time employment in comparison to other State universities and, in many fields they fare better than graduates from other Australian universities.
The University has over 18,000 students and over 3,500 staff. It has nearly $71 million in external research income and $76 million in bequests and donations. UWA has formal agreements with over 50 international institutions for promoting staff and student exchanges, collaborative research and exchange of teaching materials and methods. The University also teaches several of its programmes offshore. Transnational programmes facilitate the development of UWA as a genuinely international University and help to ensure that our students, whether at the home campus or elsewhere, become world citizens.
In addition to researchers and academics, a range of professionals contribute to the University’s performance. UWA actively encourages commercially orientated professionals to influence and support continued improvement and growth in a range of business support functions including finance, information technology, urban design and planning, and human resources.
