Dear Colleagues

We are looking for tutors with a health related and/or science degree for the undergraduate medical program units Foundations of Clinical Practice for 2009.

Foundations of Clinical Practice (FCP) are a series of units in the first three years of the undergraduate medical course. The units cover an integrated program with four disciplines involved – Population Health, Behavioural Science, Aboriginal Health, and clinical skills (this is taught by other tutors). Each discipline is covered each year, with a different emphasis in each of the years.

Year 1 FCP - Tutorial Sessions
The emphasis in this year is to give students an overview of Australia’s health, the determinants of health and study vulnerable populations including exploring culture and health. The students also study cardiovascular health, respiratory disease and communicable disease control with each topic exploring the relevant issues. People with a health related degree would be suitable for this tutoring.

Year 1 FCP – Communication Skills
In Year 1 the students also go through an introductory program in communications skills; therefore we are looking for tutors with a psychology background for this series of tutorials.

Year 2 FCP – Tutorial Sessions
In this year the students study epidemiology, evidence based practice and research methods, lifespan development, preventive medicine, musculoskeletal disease, mental health, substance use and chronic disease management. Other topics surround eating disorders (anorexia and obesity), injury control and diabetes.

Year 3 FCP
In this year there is a greater emphasis on the clinical case and people with a science and/or clinical background (e.g. medicine, nursing, physiotherapy) would be advantageous. We have four modules each semester and they cover the following systems – cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, chronic illness, psychiatry/neurology, musculoskeletal, paediatrics and haematology. There is a variety of issues that are explored in each module.

The tutorials utilise a case-based or problem-based learning approach. Training in this teaching method will be provided before commencement. Tutors are not required to experts in all of these subject areas as appropriate tutor training and support materials are provided and the tutorial are about facilitating learning. However a broad health related and/ or science background is an advantage.

The tutorials are held on the following days in semester 1:
Year 1 - Monday afternoons
Year 1 (Communication skills) – Thursday afternoons, Friday
Year 2 - Monday mornings
Year 3 – Tuesday mornings (till 2pm)
Tutor training will conducted one to two weeks before semester begins on 23 February 2009.

If you are interested or you know of someone who is interested in doing some tutoring; please send in an expression of interest including a brief curriculum vitae by Thursday 27th November to either:
Helena Iredell - School of Population Health – helena.iredell@uwa.edu.au Telephone: 6488 1274
Kellie Bennett - School of Psychiatry & Clinical Neurosciences – kellie.bennett@uwa.edu.au Telephone: 9346 2251.
