Term of academic probationary periods

This document should be read in conjunction with the University Policy : Probation and Confirmation (Academic Staff) UP07/254

Probation periods are determined by the term of appointment and the academic level of the employee.

Term

Fixed-term

All Levels

- Contract term up to and including two years

Three months, with the provision for extension of up to 3 months to ensure probation period falls during semester time.

All Levels

- Contract term greater than two years

Six months, with the provision for extension to ensure probation period falls during semester time.

Ongoing (tenurable)

Five years with the provision for extension in exceptional circumstances. May be shortened only where the employee immediately prior to the current appointment held an academic appointment of no less than 0.5 FTE at the University and that appointment was subject to annual reviews.

B

Three years with the provision to extend by up to two periods of one year each. Can be shortened on recommendation of Dean.

C, D and E

Up to three years with the provision to extend by up to two periods of one year each. Can be shortened on recommendation of Dean.
