Role of the Dean in Academic Promotion

THE ROLE OF THE DEAN IN ACADEMIC PROMOTION

The Dean is expected to:

  • review the application, including comments made by the Head of School and other senior members of staff;
  • provide comment on the assessors nominated by the Head of School;
  • after any consultation thought to be useful with the Head of School (including consideration of the formal comments) and senior members of the School, provide comments including comments on the applicant’s achievements in teaching, research and service. Comments made by the Head of School and Dean must be sighted by the applicant, who in turn may write to the Chair of the Academic Promotions Committee if they wish to respond to these comments. (Comments on applications made by the Head of School and Dean are not sent to assessors.)

The Dean will forward all application documentation to the Executive Officer for consideration by the Academic Promotions Committee.

Where the Head of School is an applicant for promotion, the Dean may appoint a senior member of staff to take on the role of Head of School in respect of the application.
