Self-Auditing Tool for Human Resource Management

This is a short assessment tool intended to assist heads, managers and supervisors to assess the quality of the human resource management in their work area. It is hoped that the information gleaned from use of this instrument on an annual basis will help heads and supervisors in the University to improve their human resource management. You are not required to complete this form. Given, however, the often costly nature of problems relating to human resource matters, it is recommended as way of providing some personal feedback to you in your human resource role.

While it can be done individually the responses will be most useful if some of your staff assist in completion of the questions. These staff should represent the diversity of those in your school or section.

The assessment tool is comprised of ten sections relating to ten human resource functions or task areas. For each section the University’s objective or expectation of the department in relation to good human resource practice is noted. There then follows a set of questions relating to practice at the local/departmental level. In general the lower the numerical score for each segment the better the quality of human resource management at the local level; the higher the scores the more likely it is that you might wish to have a closer look. Particularly where the result suggests there is reason for concern we suggest that you contact Human Resources and arrange for someone to visit your work area to discuss how you might improve existing processes in your area. The assessment, however, offers an opportunity to discuss improvements even if the results appear to be satisfactory.

Included with the assessment tool is a survey in which you can say what you think about the services, provided to you by Human Resources. Please return this feedback form to Human Resources via Sasha Gabelish (ext 3004).
