Personal Statement including record of achievements relative to opportunity

  • Significance
  • Timeframe

The number of years it has been since you graduated with your highest educational qualification and the date of your last promotion if applicable.

My last promotion was from Level B to Level C in 2006. I have built a reputation as a leading Australian [discipline] researcher, while continuing to provide leadership in teaching and learning, In the eleven years since completing my PhD, I have established a national reputation in the field of [discipline].

  • Interruptions

    Identify any career interruptions you may have had for parental leave, carer’s responsibility, misadventure, or debilitating illness, and how these have impacted on your progress, profile or record of achievements;

I took 16 months parental leave between October 2007 and February 2009 to take care of my first child. This time away from the workplace reduced my opportunities to take part in the regular research activities of the school, including meeting visiting fellows and taking up opportunities within research groups. I also missed the attending two important conferences.  In spite of this, I believe I have maintained a quality of performance and pro-rata output at least equivalent to that expected of a Level D academic.

  • Workload

Indicate the proportion of a full- time work load you have spent over the last five years in each of these categories:

    • research-intensive,
    • teaching and research,
    • teaching intensive,
    • teaching and administration,
    • research and administration.

Include any additional information (for example, part-time status, or the research intensive, teaching and service components of your employment conditions) needed to understand your situation.

I returned to work in February 2009 on a part-time basis (0.6FTE). In February 2010 I increased my fraction to 0.7FTE, where it remains. Due to parental leave and part-time work, over the last 5 years I have only actually worked for a full-time equivalent of 2.6 years. In spite of this, I believe I have maintained a quality of performance and pro-rata output at least equivalent to that expected of a Level D academic.

During my tenure at UWA I have served in three major administrative roles: Acting Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) (2004), Discipline Chair (2007), and Deputy Head of School (Research and Research Training) (2010).

I have maintained a research and administration role with a workload model weighted towards administration as approved by the Dean of the Faculty,

  • Opportunities

The research, teaching and service, opportunities that you have had in the context of your employment situation, including the research and/or teaching mentoring and research and/or teaching facilities available to you (for example teaching opportunities in the school, research support, location and timing of opportunities).

In my teaching, I am continually seeking ways to better engage and support students, to ensure a high-quality educational experience for all. My efforts in this regard have been recognised through very positive student evaluations. I have also displayed leadership in Teaching and Learning at University and Faculty level, in my capacity as the Faculty Acting Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) in 2004; through various activities and roles at Discipline Group level, ranging from development of core first-year resources to the supervision of casual staff and teaching interns; and through involvement with an interdisciplinary Australian Learning and Teaching Council funded project.  I am a supportive yet rigorous supervisor of postgraduate students; three of my students have passed with distinction.

Through my involvement with various committees at UWA I have contributed to the development of policy and procedural frameworks at University and Faculty levels, management and administration of teaching programmes, scholarships, the academic year, and scholarly output auditing, as well as implementation of the new courses framework. I have also actively fostered links between the University and the wider community, through publication and presentations to a wide range of community members and groups. Significant service to the discipline has been rendered through editorial, advisory and refereeing work.

  • Other

Any other aspects of your career or opportunities for achievement that are relevant to assessment and that have not been detailed elsewhere in this Personal Statement (for example, any circumstances that may have affected the time you have had to focus on service or teaching outcomes, to maintain your research momentum, or to conduct and publish research).

In the eleven years since completing my PhD, I have built a reputation as a leading Australian [discipline] researcher, while continuing to provide leadership in teaching and learning, I have established a national reputation in the field of [discipline].

This began with my ground-breaking work on the [area] in Australian cities, and has since broadened to include acknowledged expertise in Western Australian field 1, field 2, and field 3. My publications include one book, three edited collections, six book chapters and 14 refereed articles, in addition to numerous book reviews, reports, newspaper articles, and entries in reference works.

With colleagues I have convened four conferences, all attracting international participation. I have presented nearly 30 conference papers, several at international events. Broader (Google Scholar) and more narrow (Scopus & ISI) citation indices show that my research is attracting numerous citations the field and cognate including fields, 1, 2, 3 and 4. To date I have been a Chief Investigator (or equivalent) on successful competitive grants attracting $1 045 725 in funding for research and research-related activities. My standing is reflected in frequent invitations to referee papers for leading Australian and international journals, review books, examine PhD theses, and contribute to edited collections (increasingly with international publishers).

Summary Statement

  • Timeframe

The number of years it has been since you graduated with your highest educational qualification

It has been fifteen years since I obtained my PhD and 6 years since my last promotion.

  • Interruptions

    Identify any career interruptions you may have had for parental leave, carer’s responsibility, misadventure, or debilitating illness, and how these have impacted on your progress, profile or record of achievements;

In 2011, I was absent for eight weeks due to major knee reconstruction which prevented me from sitting or standing for long periods of time. Due to the operation and rehabilitation time, I was unable to attend to as much writing output as usual during the first semester of 2011. Prior to the surgery my mobility was seriously compromised. I was unable to sit for extended periods and was unable to travel. This loss of mobility severely limited my ability to undertake field research in Africa and China.

This has resulted in an output level a little low in numbers of publications for a Level E. Of the journal papers 24 of the 59 are in A/A* journals. In general, the other 35 papers are published in journals that are the most appropriate to the work, and have attracted some of the highest citations

I have been full time research intensive for the last 5 years, I co-supervise 6 full time HDR students. I was part time (0.5) for the three months immediately after my operation. This means that in 2011 I worked for only seven months, but continued to work with my HDR students to produce excellent results with two thesis submissions and five journal articles and two book chapters published.

  • Opportunities

The research, teaching and service, opportunities that you have had in the context of your employment situation, including the research and/or teaching mentoring and research and/or teaching facilities available to you (for example teaching opportunities in the school, research support, location and timing of opportunities).

Leadership is a major criterion for promotion to level E, and I have demonstrated my leadership potential by developing networks in industry that have allowed the school to develop its research program. I have had reduced opportunity to actually fully demonstrate my leadership capabilities within the University. This is partly because of the small size of the School in which I work, but also because of the management policies under the previous Head of School where the focus was on producing tangible research outcomes rather than support for service and leadership opportunities.

  • Any other aspects of your career or opportunities for achievement that are relevant to assessment and that have not been detailed elsewhere in this Personal Statement (for example, any circumstances that may have affected the time you have had to focus on service or teaching outcomes, to maintain your research momentum, or to conduct and publish research).<

My team and I have generated several patents in the last few years, partially explaining the low publication rate. I am the Chief Investigator for ARC funding and linkage grants up to $2 750 000 in the last 12 months.

Example: Application for promotion to Level C (male)

  • Timeframe

The number of years it has been since you graduated with your highest educational qualification

It has been fifteen years since I obtained my PhD and 10 years since my last promotion.

  • Interruptions

    Identify any career interruptions you may have had for parental leave, carer’s responsibility, misadventure, or debilitating illness, and how these have impacted on your progress, profile or record of achievements;

I have taken three periods of two weeks Partner leave over the last 5 years to welcome our three children into our family. My partner became seriously ill while pregnant with our third child and I took leave without pay for 3 months to care for the family.

This interruption excluded my participation in the International Excellence in Teaching awards for that year, and reduced the amount of time I had available to rewrite several online courses.

Over the last five years I have been 100% teaching and learning. The position to which I was appointed at tenure specified that offshore program supervision was to be an integral part of my workload.

  • Opportunities

The research, teaching and service, opportunities that you have had in the context of your employment situation, including the research and/or teaching mentoring and research and/or teaching facilities available to you (for example teaching opportunities in the school, research support, location and timing of opportunities).

I was academic director of one, two or three offshore programs for the last seven years, and this has had an inevitable impact on the time available for me to do research. Between 2004 and 2010, for example, I made 52 work related trips to [Asia] and 38 work related trips to [other places].

Notwithstanding my travel commitments, I have still achieved a high level of research output. I believe that any reservations about my research performance should be balanced by an acknowledgement of my contribution to the School in other areas.

  • Any other aspects of your career or opportunities for achievement that are relevant to assessment and that have not been detailed elsewhere in this Personal Statement (for example, any circumstances that may have affected the time you have had to focus on service or teaching outcomes, to maintain your research momentum, or to conduct and publish research).

I have been awarded twice for Excellence in Teaching, and have achieved 90% student satisfaction on SPOT scores. We have increased the retention rate in our offshore teaching programs by 50%, and secured ongoing and valuable relationships with our offshore Alumni. Due to the large amount of time I spend offshore I am often unavailable for mentoring or collaborative projects.
