Research Associate to Research Fellow
The requirement is for achievement in a relevant area of research. In general, the applicant would normally have at least some postdoctoral or research experience and a strong publication record, judged by the standards of the field. There should be evidence of the developing independence of the Research Associate.
The requirements could be demonstrated in a number of ways including:
- a personal achievement in scholarly research and communication of that achievement to others
- a willingness to undertake research with groups and individuals in the School and a willingness to co-direct and co-supervise major honours or postgraduate research projects
Consideration will be given also to activities other than research, such as
- teaching of undergraduate and graduate students, including supervision of Honours and postgraduate research project
- other contributions which involve service to the University or professional work for the community, such as participation in Committees, contributions to policy development and the ability to encourage and foster the work of others

Research Fellow to Senior Research Fellow
Research Fellow seeking promotion to Senior Research Fellow will be expected to have demonstrated substantial and significant research achievements.
The requirement is for substantial and significant achievement in a relevant area of research which has been manifested in highly-rated publications. It is expected that the Research Fellow will have national recognition in the chosen field and with some participation in international meetings. The requirements could be demonstrated in a number of ways including:
- a personal achievement in scholarly research and communication of that achievement to others
- fostering the research of other groups and individuals in the School, both within the particular discipline and within related disciplines
- direction and supervision of postgraduate students and willingness to supervise major honours or postgraduate research projects
Consideration will be given also to activities other than research, such as
- teaching of undergraduate and graduate students, including supervision of Honours and postgraduate research project
- other contributions which involve service to the University or professional work for the community, such as participation in Committees, contributions to policy development and the ability to encourage and foster the work of others

Senior Research Fellow to Principal Research Fellow
A Senior Research Fellow seeking promotion to Principal Research Fellow will be expected to have demonstrated outstanding research achievements and will normally be recognised internationally in the discipline. The requirement is for sustained, substantial and exceptional research. The requirements could be demonstrated in a number of ways including:
- a personal achievement in scholarly research and communication of that achievement to others
- fostering the research of other groups and individuals in the School, both within the particular discipline and within related disciplines
- successful supervision of postgraduate students and willingness to supervise major honours or postgraduate research projects
- experience in the development of research policy
Principal Research Fellows should also have outstanding leadership qualities and a considerable record in postgraduate training.

- other contributions which involve service to the University or professional work for the community, such as participation in Committees, contributions to policy development and the ability to encourage and foster the work of others

Principal Research Fellow to Senior Principal Research Fellow
An academic seeking promotion to Senior Principal Research Fellow will be expected to have demonstrated exceptionally distinguished research achievements and will normally be recognised as an eminent international authority in the discipline.
The requirement here is for sustained, substantial and exceptional research and scholarship (or other creative work, in case of appointments in the Arts). The requirements could be demonstrated in a number of ways including:
- publication in refereed journals, books, performances and other scholarly works, invitations to present keynote addresses at international meetings and chapters in international books, election to learned academies and other recognition such as awards, prizes and honorary degrees
- fostering the research of other groups and individuals in the School, and related disciplines
- successful supervision of postgraduate students and willingness to supervise major honours or postgraduate research projects
- experience in the development of research policy
Consideration will be given also to activities other than research, such as
- teaching of undergraduate and graduate students, including supervision of Honours and postgraduate research project
